A letter to the school management
Thursday, July 14, 2011 12:44 PM

Dear Mr Yeo
I am a student of Republic polytechnic and I am writing in to represent some of the opinions of the students in regard to the decision made on banning all social networks in the school.

We understand that this decision had been made for the benefit of all students so as to minimise the distraction and the chances of misusing the internet during school hours.

This issue had been the most common subject within students every now and then. We feel that it is unnecessary for this decision to be made as the inconvenient cause may be drastic for us.

The ban of msn would be the most inconvenient issue for the students because we used this as a form of communication to transfer information when doing group work as it is the fastest way to communicate. Although leo system enables us to upload and share information, it is way too slow as compared to msn. Time is precious; we have to work fast during our meetings. If we depend on leo in our daily work, work would most probably be submitted later than usual. What if leo crash? It is not an uncommon thing that the leo system is down some times. In this case, the access of internet and msn would be the next solution to this as we will still be able to resume work.

The ban of internet such as Facebook also limits us to the resources given; in addition that some modules require us to create media messages in different problem. With the lack of limitations, there will be a drop in quality of work leading to a drop of grades for the students. We feel that to be tied down to the limitations, it will definitely hinder our thinking process and communication.

We have come out with a solution that would be pleasing to both parties. Allowing the students to access to the social networking platform only during breaks and free time (after school),
This system would allow us to use the internet efficiently as we would be able to know what are the information we need to obtain before doing the ppt. This will limit chances that students will misuse and get distracted using the internet.

We hope that you would be able to consider our solution and modify the decision made for a win-win situation as well as to avoid any dissatisfaction and unhappiness aroused by the students.

Yours sincerely

Mojo Chan
